Tesla to offer drivers free charging during the holidays

Tesla wants you to have the best holiday; hence, it offers you free charging. However, there are conditions.

The popular EV maker has announced that Tesla car owners will charge for free deeper into the holidays. However, Tesla is only attempting to spread out the pressure on its Supercharger network.

Superchargers charge Tesla cars very fast, which is why Tesla drivers like to use them. However, apparently, the rate of expansion of the charging network has not matched the rate at which new drivers join the fold. This discrepancy has led to severe stress on the network.

The problem is most observable in California, where there are lots of Teslas cars. The state has the highest concentration of Teslas in the world.

Around holiday periods, drivers needing to recharge on long-distance travel routes experience long wait times as the Superchargers remain very busy. The first the public chargers were overwhelmed significantly was in 2018, after the launch of the Model 3.

Tesla has tried to entice drivers to charge during off-peak periods to lessen the stress on the network. It has tried offering discounts during off-peak periods so that people will time their trips around that period. The discounts have worked, and the Superchargers have been fine.

However, it seems discounts won’t be enough anymore as Tesla is offering free charging to drivers willing to come in during off-peak periods during the holidays. The company tried this during the Thanksgiving holiday in California and wants to expand it to cover Christmas time. The offer covers more states and charging stations.

If you own a Tesla car, you can charge free at the Superchargers between 7 pm and 10 am. This offer exists between December 23rd and 26th. Seventy-six stations are participating in the offer across several states. The states apparently are chosen based on the concentration of Tesla cars.

These seasonal promos show that Tesla still has a lot to do to service all its cars adequately. It also shows what the stations could look like once they begin welcoming EVs from other brands, as the CEO has committed to doing. It is already carrying out a trial in the Netherlands to prepare for a global roll-out. Perhaps, offers like this will become regular occurrences during holiday periods in the future.
