Z Flip series has been around for some time now but no entry enjoys as much appreciation and praise among the user market as Z Flip 3. It is by far the most reputed clamshell phone out there that comes with amazing specs, an over-the-top design, and a seamless flip design that just might be in your budget. If you are interested in a phone that folds right up and can fit in your bags or pockets while carrying all the specifications of a flagship phone then you can’t go wrong with Z Flip 3.

Unbeatable performance with over the top specs

Z Flip 3 comes with Snapdragon 888 which offers catalytic performance to tackle all kinds of processing, surfing through social media, playing games, or multi-tasking across the board. As for the storage, it comes in two variants i.e. 128 GB or 256 GB.

The thing is if you want larger storage then you should go for 256 GB instead of the conventional 128 GB and as for the RAM both enjoy a whopping 8 GB RAM which is more than enough to take you through a full day packed with extreme processing and multitasking. Currently, it is running the latest Android 11 and is even up there to receive modem Android updates as soon as this ships out.

Plastic OLED display—in favor of the flip design

Z Flip 3 offers a plastic OLED screen instead of glass which is so for apparent reasons, Flip phones need to be folded many times throughout the day and have to be shoved into tight pockets and spaces. All that applied pressure can crumble the glass OLED screen, that is why this one features a plastic OLED.

The size of the screen is 6.7 inch which is pretty solid given it is a Flip phone, this lands you a great picture anywhere in between LCD and OLED color levels. The crispness of the picture is although shattered, it might not appear as extremely sharp as it might on a flagship device but the overall vibrance of the color makes up for it. The refresh rate, however, is awesome being stationed at 120Hz which is highly unlikely for a Flip phone but even so it is there for the Z Flip 3.

Battery and camera setup—casual, not so out of the world

The most apparent flaw that you might have caught in this device is the 3300mAh battery which makes Z Flip 3 extremely lacking in terms of delivery. Surprisingly enough it would get you through the day if you have not opted for some heavy processing and wild performance run on your device.

It might be due to the folding aspect of the device that Samsung was reluctant to stuff in a more powerful battery or keeping into account the inactiveness the phone has to bear such as being flipped or tossed into people’s pockets for the most part. Whatever it might be Samsung should have been more considerate of battery profile.

But this is not the true shortcoming of the Z Flip 3 as the camera has not changed over the years, it is the same for the Z Flip and Z Flip 2. The back offers a 12MP f/1.8 main and a 12MP f/2.2 secondary ultra-wide camera. The front camera is a 10MP f/2.4 which is extreme

ly promising even for some of the flagship mobile devices. The camera setup is truly what’s lacking along with the battery in the Z Flip 3as compared to other technical specifications.

Sure, the camera might not be as sophisticated as the Galaxy S21 offering 3x optical zoom or those that come with even better telephoto cameras such as with S21 Ultra offering their users access to 5x optical zoom. But this doesn’t take away the one quality in which Flip 3 beats each and everyone which is the fact that it can be folded and slid into your pocket just like that while others can’t; compatibility is what makes Flip 3 a winner in this game.

What attributes make Z Flip 3 the best foldable phone for you?

Starting at a $999 price you can get yourself a folding phone however the same can’t be said about a flagship model. The sincere buying decision for any user rests at the foldability of the phone, if you are not a fan of this aspect then this phone is not for you. This is merely what makes this phone stand out from those flagship models.

On the other hand, if these are merely the features that you seek then those can be found elsewhere and with much more rigor such as with the other flagship phones offered by Samsung or any other company of your choosing.

Something to think about when deciding to buy this phone has to be the materials using which this phone is made such as the building material along with the hinges that offer the folding of the screen, the plastic OLED implementation, and the phone being water-resistant is definitely a great catch.

Water resistance was included as a feature in most of the Samsung Flagship phones but it seems more necessary of inclusion for Z Flip 3 than for any other flagship device out there. All of this offers great strength and durability to the Z Flip 3 and is definitely something to look up to.

Final Thoughts

A bothering element for some, however highly unlikely is the small but straight crease present right in the middle which necessarily seems to be dividing the screen in two. It doesn’t distract you from the normal use of the phone and is not alarming in any way.

The design is extremely compact and feels like has been executed by keeping in view the way people will be holding the phone, sliding it across their pockets, bags, or folding it up and down as they need to. Once you have come across using this phone in normal routine you will find that it is a perfectly suitable phone for both nominal and extreme users.

Pros

  • Water resistance
  • Favorable price offering with good specification
  • Extremely refined design
  • Attractive design
  • Foldability

Cons

  • Extremely short battery life
  • Questionable durability in the long run
  • Lacking telephoto lens
