Apple held its September California event yesterday. In the event, the Cupertino giant announced iPhone 13 Series, two new iPads, and Apple Watch Series 7. We have covered the iPad and Apple Watch announcement in separate articles. This article is all about the iPhone 13 Series. Just like last year, there are four new iPhone models launched this year: iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max. Below are the detailed specifications and features of newly launched iPhones.
iPhone 13 Series Announced
Before we take a deep dive into the specifications first let’s look at the highlights, the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini have got an improved dual-camera system, A15 Bionic processor, Super Retina XDR display, 128GB base storage, IP68 rating.. The highlights of iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are ProMotion Display, Triple Camera system, A15 Bionic, up to 1TB Storage, etc.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini
The iPhone 13 and 13 Mini pack a 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR Display respectively. It features Ceramic Shield making it the toughest smartphone glass. Apple has redesigned the True Depth Camera system to make the Display notch smaller by 20% and still packing the Face ID. The Display has a max outdoor brightness of up to 800 Nits an improvement of around 28%.
Powering the devices is an all-new A15 Bionic chip. The A15 Bionic is built on a 5nm process and packs over 15 Billion transistors. It has a new 6 core CPU with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. Then there is a four-core GPU and 16 core neural engine capable of processing 15.8 trillion operations per second.
Apple has redesigned the rear camera layout, now the two 12MP lenses are arranged diagonally. The main Wide Sensor has a 1.7-micron pixel size making it the largest camera sensor in any iPhone dual-camera system. It also has Sensor-Shift OIS technology first found in last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max. The second lens is an Ultra-Wide sensor with a 122-degree field of view. Some of the newly added camera features are Cinematic mode, HDR video recording with Dolby vision.
The battery life is also improved on both iPhone 13 and 13 Mini. The iPhone 13 will last 2.5 hour longer than iPhone 12 whereas iPhone 13 Mini battery will give you 1.5 hour longer usage than iPhone 12 Mini. Both devices are now IP68 rated for water and dust resistance instead of IP67 in last year models.
The iPhone 13 and 13 Mini are priced at $799 and $699 respectively. The base model now has 128GB storage with other storage options as 256GB and 512GB. It will be available in five colors: pink, blue, midnight, starlight, and (Product) RED. The pre-orders will start from 17th September and are available starting 24th September.
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED Display as last year’s 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. But the biggest improvement comes in the form of the ProMotion adaptive refresh rate. The Display’s refresh rate will adapt between 10Hz and 120Hz as per the content you are consuming to help preserve the battery life. The new Display panels are 25% brighter capable of giving a peak brightness level of 1000 nits.
Coming to cameras the Pro iPhone models have a Triple camera system in which all the sensors are 12MP. The main Wide sensor has a pixel size of 1.9-micron largest ever in an iPhone and an aperture of f/1.5. It also has Sensor-Shift OIS technology. The Ultra-Wide sensor has an f/1.8 aperture and a new autofocus system. It is also capable of taking Macro Photos from as close as 2cm. The Third sensor is a 77mm telephoto lens that offers 3x optical zoom.
Some other exciting camera features are Smart HDR 4, Deep Fusion, Apple Pro RAW, Portrait mode with Portrait lighting. iPhones have been always praised for their video capabilities and with the new iPhone 13, Series Apple has uplifted the game even further. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have cinematic mode and ProRes video features.
In the performance department, Pro iPhone models pack the same A15 Bionic chip with a 5 core GPU instead of 4 in iPhone 13 and 13 Mini. The A15 Bionic is based on the 5nm process. On the CPU front, A15 packs the same 6 core CPU with two high performance cores and four efficiency cores. It also has a 16 core neural Engine capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second.
Apple has claimed the battery of iPhone 13 Pro will last 1.5 hour longer than iPhone 12 Pro whereas iPhone 13 Pro Max battery will keep you juiced up 2.5 hour longer than iPhone 12 Pro Max. Despite the addition of ProMotion Display improving the battery life is possible due to high efficiency of A15 Bionic. The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are IP68 rated giving you protection from water and dust.
Lastly, coming to pricing and availability, The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are priced $999 and $1099 respectively. There are four color options: graphite, gold, silver, and sierra blue. The base storage will be 128GB and other storage options will be 256GB, 512GB and a new 1TB storage option. The devices will be available for pre order starting 17th September and will go on sale on 24th September.
It was expected there will be no drastic changes in this year’s iPhones. Think of it as an ‘s’ upgrade. The main improvements are in Display and Camera. The Notch has got smaller by 20% and all four models have new camera sensors. The Pro models have got much anticipated ProMotion 120Hz Display. The battery capacity on each model is also significantly improved. Obviously, the addition of A15 Bionic will make certain differences in performance.
