If you have been looking forward to a flip phone by Apple, we have got news for you!
Ever since Samsung released its popular foldable phones, the rumors about Apple’s version of a folding phone have gotten stronger. It is no news that Apple waits for the market before releasing a product in a new category, but fans are eager to see a foldable iPhone.
There is hardly a doubt that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone, as shown by a raft of patent applications. However, Apple has to respond with its own bendy phone as it is the phone industry’s direction.
In this article, we bring you the latest news about Apple’s foldable iPhone.
According to its yearly tradition, Apple released new devices in 2021, including the iPhone 13, Apple Watch 7, AirPods 3, and MacBook Pros. However, the foldable iPhone was missing, to the disappointment of many fans.
Back in 2017, rumors started building up that the Cupertino company would release a folding phone by 2020. However, when the phone failed to materialize, analysts moved the release date forward.
So when is the foldable iPhone coming? First, let’s tell you everything we know about the rumored foldable iPhone.
The foldable iPhone design
Apple has applied for numerous patents in connection with its upcoming foldable phone. These applications give us a glimpse of what the phone may eventually look like. However, the applications have covered different types of foldable phones, including origami-style, a flip, and a wraparound. This makes it more difficult to predict what the final product will look like. However, respected Apple watcher Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg agree that the upcoming foldable iPhone will be in the style of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, meaning there is an outer screen and the phone opens into a large tablet.
The phone will open into a 7.5 or 8-inch display in this form factor.
However, another Apple watcher, Jon Prosser, thinks Apple is also working on a flip foldable, and it will come in different colors. Going by the recent colors that Apple has released, the flip iPhone may come in blue and pink, in addition to Apple’s regular shades. In reality, Apple can release the two models like Samsung, even if the two will not come at the same time.
What stage is Apple in the development of the foldable iPhone?
Bloomberg reported in 2021 that Apple had a working prototype of a foldable display. It wasn’t a working model, but the company is expected to have made progress in the design since then.
Holding back has given Apple the chance to learn from the mistakes of other foldable phone makers like Samsung and Motorola. This includes how to deal with the crease that usually plagues foldable phones. Apple can avoid the crease by using a bending screen from Corning. While the company has not reported having such a screen yet, the two companies could be working together behind the scenes. At any rate, Corning has already said it is working on a bending glass.
How much will the foldable iPhone cost?
As Samsung and other companies have proven, foldable phones do not come cheap. However, the price will depend on whether the phone is a flip or wraparound.
The Apple models will likely be priced similarly to existing foldable phones, meaning you might pay up to $2,000 for Apple’s foldable phone.
When will the Apple foldable iPhone come?
There is no official release timeframe, as Apple would prefer to surprise its fans. However, Kuo suggests 2023 could be the year we see a folding phone bearing the famous Apple logo. Another analyst, Mark Gurman, expects these new phones in two or three years.
