After announcing the plan of making a transition from the Intel chips to Apple Silicon. Apple first announced its M1 chip last year in November. In the same event, the company announced two new MacBook models: MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. The next MacBook to taste the M1 was of course going to be a 16-inch MacBook Pro. Earlier this month Apple scheduled a launch event for 18th October.
The highlights of these MacBook Pros are chips running behind them the M1 Pro and M1 Max. These are the two new chips announced in today’s event. Apple has packed a hell of a lot of power in these chips. Actually, they are the first pro chips designed for Mac. Both M1 Pro and M1 Max pack a 10-core CPU, up to 32-core CPU, and 16-core neural engine. The performance coming is just insane. We have covered these new chips in more detail in a separate article which you can read by clicking here.
Coming to the Display, there is a lot going on here. The first thing you will immediately notice is a notch in the top center of the screen just like iPhone models. What a notch on the MacBook. Yes, Apple has gone crazy to give the maximum screen real estate so they have shrunken the bezels, and to do this they have gone for a notch. The notch houses a 1080p Facetime HD camera. We will discuss the camera performance in a bit more detail later in this article. T
Talking about the Display size the 16-inch model has a 16.2-inch Display whereas the 14-inch model has a 14.2-inch Display. Apple is calling the Display Liquid Retina XDR Display. You might have heard this term before. Yes, It is the same display that Apple has used in the 12.9 inch iPad Pro. The MacBook Pro has the same Mini LED Display tech like the iPad Pro 12.9-inch. The Display has 1000 nits of normal brightness and up to 1600-nits of peak brightness.
It has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, support for the P3 colour gamut, and 1 billion colours. What does not come as a surprise is a support for ProMotion – an adaptive rate of 120Hz. Now we have a high refresh rate on Macs too. Apple has enabled the feature that video editors can lock in the refresh rate as per their need. The 16-inch model has 7.7 million pixels whereas the 14-inch model has 5.9 million pixels. Even the 14-inch model has a higher number of pixels than the last generation 16-inch model.
Now let’s talk about the connectivity options on these MacBook Pros. Apple has faced a lot of criticism for removing useful ports in MacBooks. Now the company is trying to shed some curtain on that. The new MacBook Pro has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, one SDXc Card Slot, one HDMI port, an improved headphone jack, Magsafe. Yes, the MagSafe is also back to provide safety while charging.
For the very first time, MacBook Pro has got the support for fast charging. Now it can get charged 50% in less than 30 minutes. By using the available connectivity options one can connect two Pro Display XDR with MacBook Pro powered by M1 Pro and up to 3 Pro Display XDR with MacBook Pro powered by M1 Max. And there will still be room for connecting a 4k TV through an HDMI port. Other wireless connectivity options like Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 are also there in these notebooks.
Apple has also upgraded the cameras on these MacBooks. Now they come with a 1080p FaceTime HD camera. It has double the resolution and low light performance of the previous generation MacBook Pro. It uses a powerful ISP and neural engine present on M1 Pro and M1 Max for better computational video. Not just camera audio performance has also got some improvements. The MacBook Pro has studio-quality Mics, high fidelity six-speaker system. The speaker system has two tweeters and four canceling woofers. It also has the support for Spatial audio.
In terms of battery life as per the Apple claim, the 14-inch MacBook Pro is said to have up to 17 hours of video playback. The 16-inch model is said to have up to 21-hour battery life. Apple has also added a Magic keyboard to these Macs with a full height function row, RIP touch bar. The Trackpad is now also improved.
With all these features the 14-inch MacBook Pro’s starting price is $1999. The 16-inch MacBook Pro has a starting price of $2499. Both the models are available for order today and will be available starting 26th October. Anyways, what do you guys think about the new MacBook Pros? Do let us know in the comments.
