AMD promises chips for cheap laptops with 10-hour battery life

Do you wish for a Windows laptop with 10 hours of battery? AMD says it can sell you one and for cheap.

It used to be that AMD-powered laptops were hard to find, but these days, it is raining Windows laptops using AMD chips. In fact, the company has said 200 laptop models will use its chip in 2022 alone. AMD made this announcement at Computex 2022, where it revealed the Mendocino.

AMD wants to make budget Windows devices capable of filling most of your computing needs.

AMD has a new line of Ryzen chips for laptops that combine four Zen 2 CPU cores from the last gen with the latest RDNA 2 graphics, using TSMC’s 6nm process. This combo should deliver more than 10 hours of battery, with you paying between $399 and $699. AMD says Chromebooks can use the new chips too.

Manufacturers’ definition of 10-hour battery life may differ from actual users’ experiences. However, according to AMD, most laptops in the $399 to $699 range offer between four and six hours of battery life. So, AMD might be judging itself on real terms, after all.

However, this is not the first time AMD is promising better battery life at Computex. It did the same about ten years ago when it tried to promote a quad-core chip offering longer battery life and better. This was AMD’s attempt to get out of Intel’s shadow as the cheap alternative.

To be fair, things are different for AMD now than then. It is now taken more seriously as a chipmaker. This means it will not have trouble finding OEM partners.

Corsair will launch its first gaming laptop, known as the Corsair Voyager, which uses only AMD chips. According to the head of AMD’s gaming effort, Frank Azor, the Voyager is the first-ever laptop designed as a truly mobile streaming solution. It has a secondary touchscreen serving a purpose similar to the Elgato Stream Deck, which you can carry around. The gaming laptop has a 16-inch main display with a 240 Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium.

Also powered by AMD is the new Lenovo Legion Slim 7 with a 16-inch screen. It comes with a 99.99 Wh battery and is 17 mm thick. However, there is a thicker version that has force sensors integrated into the WASD keys. HP is also making the Omen 16, which can automatically move tasks to integrated graphics, netting 60 percent more playtime of League of Legends, according to AMD and HP.

Meanwhile, the truth is always in the fine print. AMD explains it dialed down the graphics to medium and put the laptop on Best Battery to get the fantastic battery life reported.

Even at that, it is impressive that Lenovo can use AMD chips to make a laptop as thin as the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro X and get impressive gaming specs.
