Amazon’s Alexa can now tell when there is a person or package at the door

Amazon’s Alexa keeps getting new features, and the personal digital assistant can now tell if there is a person or package at the door.

Step by step, Amazon’s Alexa is taking over the house’s running from actual humans. The digital assistant has now stepped up its home butler’s game as it can alert you when a person or package is at your door. It will do this through your video doorbell or security camera.

The new feature works with an Echo smart display and Fire TV. You can even get a live feed of the visitor as it can automatically start recording. Ring, Google Nest, and Abode are also getting an integration. Other brands can also get in through a new API from Amazon.

If you own a Ring video doorbell or camera, Amazon says person detection is rolling out already, and you can get it through an update. Google Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Floodlight, Nest Doorbell, Abode IOTA, and Abode Outdoor Camera will soon be getting the update to enable person detection.

Alexa can take action when a person is detected, including turning on a porch light, controlling a smart lock, or starting up the sprinklers to surprise unwanted visitors.

Package detection has been offered on the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 and Ring Video Doorbell 22020. Abode’s IOTA and Outdoor cameras will be getting it soon. However, Google Nest cameras won’t get it. But then, Nest doorbells come with their own package detection feature.

Amazon has been using its new Object Detection Sensor API to enable camera makers to add the extra features to their products.

However, they do not come for free as the consumer has to pay. On Ring products, you will need to be on a $3 per month Ring Protect plan to access them. Abode users have to subscribe to a plan costing $7 per month. Google offers people detection at no charge.

Many doorbells that work with Alexa can already announce through an Echo speaker the presence of a human at the door. Ring devices can even display a live feed on an Echo Show or Fire TV. At the very least, many cameras can detect motion. However, the new feature allows the cameras to detect people or packages. It makes sense when delivery workers decide not to ring the doorbell.

To allow Alexa to announce persons or packages, you need to turn on the feature. Each doorbell or camera maker has its procedure for doing this. You will then open the Alexa app and go to the camera or doorbell settings. After the update, there will be a new section called Camera Events. This is where you enable and customize people and package detection. If you have more than one Alexa device, you can set the one to make the announcement.
