ABB debuts the world fastest electric vehicle charger

One of the differences that ICE car owners who switch to electric vehicles will notice is that it takes longer to ‘refuel’ their new cars. Charging at home might take a whole night to get to 100 percent, and using a fast public charger might take up to an hour. However, charging duration is set to drop significantly with ABB’s new Terra 360 EV charger, the fastest in the world.

The Terra 360 charger is modular in design, meaning you can select the components based on your need. It can charge four cars at the same time, which will make charging queues disappear fast.

With a maximum output of 360 kW, ABB’s new charger can fill up a vehicle’s battery in under 15 minutes. It is possible to add 100 km in less than three minutes.

EV owners can realistically get a full charge while having a bathroom break or eating a meal during longer trips where they have to stop to recharge several times. They can also charge fully while shopping for groceries or using the Laundromat.

European EV owners will start to enjoy the benefits of the Terra 360 charger later this year, while the USA, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific regions will get on board in 2022.

ABB tapped into its extensive experience with e-mobility to design the Terra 360 charger to meet the daily needs and expectations of EV drivers. They will also find the new chargers convenient to use and familiar.

Using the Terra 360, EV drivers will get more insight into the charging experience, including the battery’s State of Charge (SoC) and how long it would take to charge fully. ABB has also made sure the chargers are accessible for users in wheelchairs, demography that is often overlooked in the EV industry. The charging cables are easy to handle, and it takes minimal effort to plugin.

ABB is targeting fueling stations, convenience stores, and retail locations to install the new charger. It is also suitable for commercial organizations that run electric fleets of cars, vans, and trucks. Due to their small sizes, fleet operators can install multiple charging points in their depots even when space is a premium. A single charger will charge four vehicles completely overnight.

Clients can customize their Terra 360 chargers to make them match their brand colors, with ABB using different foiling and colors of the LED light strips. The charger even has a 27-inch screen to display advert pictures or videos.

The new chargers will work with different EV brands, including Hyundai, GM, Ford, Rivian, Lucid, Tesla, etc. ABB is releasing just in time to take advantage of the boom in EVs that is coming.

There is no information on pricing yet.

“With governments around the world writing public policy that favors electric vehicles and charging networks to combat climate change, the demand for EV charging infrastructure, especially charging stations that are fast, convenient, and easy to operate is higher than ever,” said Frank Muehlon, President of ABB’s E-mobility Division. “The Terra 360, with charging options that fit a variety of needs, is the key to fulfilling that demand and accelerating e-mobility adoption globally.”

“It’s an exciting day for ABB, who, as the global leader in electric vehicle fast charging, is playing a key role in enabling a low carbon society,” said Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer at ABB. “With road transport accounting for nearly a fifth of global CO2 emissions, e-mobility is critical to achieving the Paris climate goal. We will also lead by example by switching our entire fleet of more than 10,000 vehicles to non-emitting vehicles.”

ABB is a leader in the electric vehicle infrastructure space, with a range of products and services supporting electric vehicles for commercial and private applications. Cars, buses, trucks, vans, and ships use its products regularly.

Since entering the e-mobility sector in 2010, ABB has sold more than 460,000 EV chargers in more than 88 countries. More than 21,000 of them are DC fast chargers. The company has worked in partnership with global third-party charging operators like IONITY and Electrify America.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a leading global technology company that energizes the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future.
